Back Home: cooperative rope platformer (M1 project)
About the project
Back Home is a cooperative 2D platformer played in pairs, where you and your partner each control a small character in a fantastical world. Following a sacred ritual, the two protagonists are now bound together by a rope and must find their way home. Learn to cooperate and use the rope to cross the level and overcome its obstacles.
It was a Master's (M1) project, made in two months.
My role
I was in charge of gameplay programming.
The main difficulty was the rope physics, combined with 2D platformer physics. The challenge was to get a good feel with a stable, performant rope that can stretch, relax, collide with the environment, shrink and expand.
My priority was not to restrict the players, and to make the mechanics fun and controllable: "easy to learn, hard to master".
Through this project, I gained a deep knowledge of Unity's physics pipeline.
