In 2020 I joined PlayMagic as an Experienced Programmer, in a team of 50, for the last 3 months before the release of XIII, the remake of the 2003 Ubisoft cult cel-shaded shooter.

My job was to debug the game: track down and fix bugs so the team could ship on time.

What I did

Experienced Programmer · 3 months
  • Joined for the last 3 months before release
  • 150 bugs fixed across the game, so it shipped on time

After the release

In early 2021, I kept working at PlayMagic on Unity tools and R&D:

  • FMOD refactor: every way of playing a sound merged into one small SoundManager.
  • Spline chunks: any controller can trigger actions along a spline.
  • FMOD sound propagation, R&D with a sound designer: how sound travels through a level, indoors and outdoors, and stays optimized. Bounces, attenuation, and sound going through materials, air and water.
  • Unreal Engine ramp-up: tools, then gameplay.
